Google experiments with e-books designed for your phone
E-books are just digital recreations of what
you can get on paper. Wouldn't it be better if they took advantage of
internet-connected mobile devices to tell new stories? Google, at least,
wants to give this a shot. It just launched Editions At Play,
an experiment in making e-books that rely on the dynamic qualities of
the mobile web to do what you can't in print. One book (Reif Larsen's Entrances & Exits, above) sets stories inside Google Street View
locations that you can explore. Others create portals full of animation
and sound, degrade the text alongside a character's mind or let you
flip between two sides of the same tale.
Don't expect a
big Edition At Play library, at least not at first. Only two short
books are available right now, with two more due this spring. Google is
even soliciting ideas to help get the concept off the ground. You
won't see these internet-savvy titles taking over regular e-book stores
any time soon. Still, this is promising stuff -- it shows how
literature can stay relevant in an era when you can easily read on your
phone instead of pulling out a paperback.
LG will unveil the G5 on February 21st
It's no secret that LG has something
planned for Mobile World Congress this month (it mentioned an event
weeks ago), but the Korean tech giant is now making it clear as to
what's up. It's posting teasers confirming a G5 unveiling just ahead of MWC, on February 21st. Yes, that's the same day that Samsung announces the Galaxy S7 -- unlike last year, LG isn't waiting until sometime after the big mobile trade show to debut its latest flagship smartphone.
Google's February Security patch is live — here's what you need to know!
Welcome back to another thrilling episode of Google's Monthly Security Update. February has arrived, and that means it is time for Google to outline all of the patches being made to Android and point out who made those patches.
For the uninitiated, Google (and the Android Open Source Project) accepts contributions from external sources as well as the teams inside Google. Every month these contributions are sent to Google's partners so they can update their own devices, and roughly a month later those updates are pushed to the Nexus line. Some partners are really good about updating their products, but this monthly cycle is still a challenge for many companies using Android on their products.
The issues marked Critical by Google's internal team this month are all about escalation of privileges and remote code execution. The February update will address remote code issues in a Broadcom Wifi driver as well as the Mediaserver, while dealing with escalation issues in Qualcomm's performance module, Wifi driver, and debugger daemon. There also are escalation vulnerabilities being addressed in the general Android Wifi and Mediaserver systems, but these issues were marked High instead of Critical in Google's severity list. An update to the Minikin library addressed a possible Denial of Service vulnerability as well.
Two CVE markers labeled Moderate by Google point to a way to bypass the factory reset protection in the Android setup wizard, and these issues have been patched. While Google has marked this issue Moderate, it's important to understand what this issue means for users. A vulnerability existed that allowed someone who knew how to bypass the security measure that keeps someone from accessing your phone just by performing a factory reset. As is often the case, Google claims there are no reports of active customer exploitation using the issues that have been reported and and patched in this update.
Nexus users who want to flash this update right now can head to the Google Developer site and grab the latest release for flashing. An OTA update with this patch will be available to Nexus phones and tablets in the immediate future, though BlackBerry Priv owners may have noticed this OTA update was available this morning and can be installed now.

Google Calendar adds smart suggestions for more languages, 54 new holiday calendars
Google is rolling out an update to its Calendar app that brings support for 30 new languages with smart suggestions when setting up events.
With event smart suggestions, users can more quickly set up events in
their calendar as Google suggests locations and people to add once you
start typing the title. All users have to do is tap on a suggestion to
have it added to the event.
Also in the latest update is support for 54 new country-based holiday calendars. With the additions, users can choose to add public holidays from one or more of a total of 143 countries to their calendar by heading to the Settings menu and selecting the "Holidays" option.
Google says the update currently in the process of rolling out, so it may take a couple of days to show up for your device. For the full list of newly supported languages with smart suggestions.

These are the Galaxy S7 features you want to see most
A few weeks ago Phil asked what you want to see from the Galaxy S7. You let us know in the comments and in the forums, and we've got the breakdown for you. There was plenty to love about the Galaxy S6, but some things — like the battery life — left a bit to be desired.
We dug through everything you said you wanted and compiled the top five features that you're hoping to see from the Galaxy S7. You told us through your comments here on Android Central, as well as over on Youtube. Now, there were a lot of feature requests, so we had to narrow it down a bit: here are your top five:
This last year was the first one we saw without Samsung phones rocking removable storage, and we're actually pretty hopeful for it's return since Marshmallow supports adoptable storage. Judging by the number of people clamoring for it, adding expandable storage back in to their phones might be a good move for Samsung.
If you spend a lot of time playing music over your phone, you want the best sound you can possibly get. If the HTC One M9 is any yardstick to measure by, then front-facing speakers simply offer a superior sound experience. While this might be tricky for Samsung thanks to their insistence on a physical home button, just about everyone would love to see front-facing speakers in the Galaxy S7.
If your hope was to see better — or different RAM management from Samsung, there isn't much to suggest that you're going to get it. The transition to Marshmallow makes anything possible, but there hasn't been an indication that Samsung sees a problem with the way they handle RAM on their phones. At this point it's unlikely that we'll see much of a deviation from the way things currently work in Touchwiz.
Samsung has had an iffy relationship with waterproofing, as you might remember from the Galaxy S5. The last few years though have seen improvements in the technology like internal gaskets for a better seal, along with superhydrophobic nano coatings on the ports of smartphones. So with technological advancement, it's no wonder they're giving things another shot, especially since so many of us have unfortunate accidents that involve water damage.

You told us through your comments here on Android Central, as well as over on Youtube. Now, there were a lot of feature requests, so we had to narrow it down a bit: here are your top five:
Better battery life
The most-requested improvement for the Galaxy S7 was most definitely better battery life. You want a battery that has the juice to get you through the day, and then some. The Galaxy S6 simply doesn't have a large battery, and that means that most owners find themselves having to keep charging it back up throughout the day. Considering that for many of us our phones are an integral part of getting through each day, having to keeping a constant eye on your battery just isn't a good time for anybody involved.Expandable storage
Having access to expandable storage through your phone is the second feature that you told us was essential. It's not hard to imagine why either. Flagship phones are a pricey commitment, and going a year or two with limited storage that you can't expand on can be excruciating. So you want a microSD so that you can pump up your available space to get the most out of your phone. This last year was the first one we saw without Samsung phones rocking removable storage, and we're actually pretty hopeful for it's return since Marshmallow supports adoptable storage. Judging by the number of people clamoring for it, adding expandable storage back in to their phones might be a good move for Samsung.
Front-facing speakers
When it comes to listening to music or watching videos on your phone, you want to be able to clearly hear what is going on. That's where front- facing speakers come in, and it's the third-most-requested feature by you, the Android Central reader. You want to be able to play your music loudly, rocking out wherever you are, without the sound being muffled in the process.
RAM management
Plenty of you asked for Samsung to start handling RAM management the standard way that Google has built into Android. It makes sense, too; who doesn't want smoother multitasking? As we see more high-quality apps and games appearing, Samsung's way of doing things stands out as less-than-great, especially compared to other phones out there.
Waterproofing
Coming in fifth for the features you most wanted to see on the Galaxy S7 is better waterproofing. For as long as there have been smartphones in our pockets, there have been encounters with it's arch nemesis: water. We all know somebody who managed to drop their phone into water (or you are that somebody) and then desperately tried to dry it out afterwards. With increased waterproofing you wouldn't have to worry nearly as much about an accidental mishap at the beach or pool — or at home in the bathroom or kitchenSamsung has had an iffy relationship with waterproofing, as you might remember from the Galaxy S5. The last few years though have seen improvements in the technology like internal gaskets for a better seal, along with superhydrophobic nano coatings on the ports of smartphones. Ad blocker for Samsung's browser removed from Google Play
Samsung recently announced a new API that would allow developers to build content and ad blockers
for its web browser, and now one has been removed from Google Play.
Adblock Fast, an app from the team at Rocketship Apps, was downloaded
more than 50,000 times following its release, and made its way to the
top charts quickly. The developers received an email from the Google
Play Review Team, citing that the app was in violation of section 4.4 of
the Developer Distribution Agreement. That section reads as:
While Adblock Fast isn't exactly messing with the content, as it used an official Samsung API that only worked on Samsung's own browser, Google has still removed the app. It is possible that this is all a misunderstanding or an error, or a sign that Google isn't interested in having these apps in its store. Google allows various ad blocking browsers in its store already, so it's not likely this app was removed because it blocks ads.4.4 Prohibited Actions. You agree that you will not engage in any activity with the Store, including the development or distribution of Products, that interferes with, disrupts, damages, or accesses in an unauthorized manner the devices, servers, networks, or other properties or services of any third party including, but not limited to, Android users, Google or any mobile network operator. You may not use customer information obtained from the Store to sell or distribute Products outside of the Store.
